While the United States claims Arizona’s majestic Grand Canyon as one of the country’s definitive treasures, this geological marvel captures the interest of visitors from around the world. With this global presence, it’s no surprise that the project to build a skywalk over the canyon’s west rim, turned out to be a multi-cultural endeavor – a fitting tribute to the host country – one that was built upon the concept of a global melting pot.
Skywalk visionary David Jin, a prominent Las Vegas developer, was born in China. The site of the entire project sits in the middle of the Hualapai Tribe’s reservation in Arizona…and so the list goes – offering a large mix of not only suppliers and professionals from across the United States but also across the world.
And, let’s not forget the international press. Throughout the multi-year construction process, and particularly at the end of the long, four-year journey, reporters and editors from the news, consumer and trade media converged upon the canyon’s west rim to watch history take shape.
“The world’s press was there taking pictures, videos, doing interviews and observing,” recalls Bill Karren of Lochsa Engineering. “They wanted to see what was happening. I wasn’t used to having so much attention on a project. Normally, we quietly do our work, and the buildings go up. In this case, everyone all over the world was interested. The Grand Canyon is a special place. It means quite a bit to people.”
